The white male card... the familiar whine of the wounded literary animal whose heart aches for those continually oppressed voices of female gender and darker skin pigmentation. What a freedom-fighter you are to recognize and uplift these writers. So what are we complaining about today? Margaret Atwood's Canadian, the charm of Alice Walker has worn off now that so much time has passed since Spielberg made a great movie out of a crummy book, and Didion's fiction is a laugh compared to the strength of her non. And the white pages of northeastern Connecticut? Well, does anyone give a shit that the best cheese comes out of Wisconsin or the best oranges from Florida? And what has Bloom got to do with it for christ's sake?? His Western Canon is filled with men, women, all colors, all nationalities, African, Middle Eastern, Hebrew, and yes, lots of white males. They make great writers too.

Very eloquent. I, however, do not feel very eloquent. Here goes.

--I agree, it disgusts me.
--I agree, Beloved isn't all that.
--I read Housekeeping. It wasn't all that.
--Jonathan Franzen sucks. Pompous.
--Jess Row has a novel coming out. It is going to be the best American novel ever written.
