the show’s over

“With no vote to sell, their motto is “couldn’t care less,”

Time was when their plebiscite elected generals, heads of state, commanders of legions:

But now they’ve pulled in their horns,

There’s only two things that concern them: BREAD and CIRCUSES.”

It is not my intention to lecture you or the average American citizen about exercising your rights or fulfilling your duties within our society. Nor is it my purpose to discuss the decline of the plebeian class in Imperial Rome in its final decades before the fall and how this decline may have hastened the destruction of its empire. Instead I would like to add my voice to the meager collection that is decrying the constant frenzy of media attention on things that are better left alone and their neglect of things that need the harsh light of inquiry.

These things are better left to the people immediately and intimately involved:

Terri Schiavo: I know people want to get worked up over legal issues here but the law passed by Congress is unconstitutional. If they ever managed to get a court to hear this case it would be immediately struck down

Michael Jackson: OK, he’s a celebrity and child molestation is a terrible crime. But it is also a matter for a closed court, its jury and judge. This is not a car wreck on the side of the road – nothing to see here, move along.

Steroid use in Baseball: If grown men playing a kid’s game are stupid and insecure enough to put their health in jeopardy over the flight of a baseball, then I say let them. Sterility and brain damage are too good for them.

These things need intelligent inquiry and reporting of the facts:

The current budget resolution in Congress:

Cuts for Medicaid, food stamps, education, transportation, health care for veterans, law enforcement, medical research and safety inspections for food and drugs while providing new tax cuts for the wealthy – Why are we punishing the citizens who need assistance most while rewarding those who need it least?

The continuing violence and despair among our young people:

Our government has us living in a constant state of war on many fronts. Families are in debt and under/unemployed. Educational opportunities are harder to come by and offer less in the way of gainful employment. Environmental protection has been traded for corporate profit. Our leaders are mired in scandal. Is anyone really confused as to why our children lack hope and energy with regard to their own future?

Why Paul Wolfowitz after screwing up Iraq, gets promoted to the chance to screw up the World Bank:

Hailing us as saviors and the oil revenues would pay for reconstruction… why is someone so delusional to be put in charge of development lending in the Third World? Could it be that our ruling party wants to dismantle the international aid framework in the same fashion that they want to dismantle Social Security?

The raping of our natural preserves to satisfy campaign contributors:

Why aren’t people screaming ANWR Dome. Why should one president be able to undermine the intent of another president when doing so will not in any material way solve the problem of oil prices? Instead of looking to enrich the coffers of the oil companies our leaders should be looking to conservation and alternative fuel technologies. Instead of allowing our automotive industry to continue to build obsolete, wasteful vehicles push them to make hybrids better and more affordable. Why destroy a wilderness in order to maintain the status quo?

Tom DeLay, Indian Gaming and the House Ethics Committee:

This man is a prime example of “money talks.” His political war chest is so huge that the rest of these people, more concerned with reelection than with the law, have surrendered their integrity and obligation to their constituents in favor of contributions to their PACs. I don’t know when there has been a more blatant grab for power. With their latest display of shameless exploitation of the Schindlers and Schiavos, DeLay and his cronies have destroyed whatever confidence was left in our elected representatives.

The bigotry and hypocrisy that denies rights to our GLBT citizens:

Why are economically productive, law abiding citizens denied rights simply because of the gender they choose to share intimate relations with in their personal lives? Why is religious dogma considered sufficient reason for suspending the civil rights of our citizens and legal residents?

The continuing effort to enslave women to their reproductive organs:

Why are the rights of a clump of dividing cells more important than the woman who must nurture them to ensure their survival? When men can walk away and force a woman to prove paternity; when government can withhold economic aid and healthcare; when a rapist can force his semen into his victim, why can’t a woman have final say over what happens inside her own body?

Nonfamous has a new look and I’ve got a whole new attitude! WAKE UP, AMERICA! Pull yourself away from the TV, stop listening to the pundits and start demanding the facts! You grew fat and lazy through eight years of Clinton and now the Bushies have you cowering in the corner afraid of your own thoughts.

“A prince is also respected when he is either a true friend or a downright enemy, that is to say, when, without any reservation, he declares himself in favour of one party against the other; which course will always be more advantageous than standing neutral.”

Niccolo Machiavelli, The Prince
