Selling out to the man: Google AdWords

OK, don't shoot me. We're going to try this Google Adwords thing for the rest of the month. I'm sure it's not going to make us millionaires, but our costs for the site are increasing and I'm cautiously optimistic it can become self-supporting.

MovableType, the software that runs the blog, is going to cost several hundred dollars starting with the next upgrade (which includes features that promise to lock out the content spammers). It's a good product, and the creators should be able to earn a living.

We will get paid by clickthrough, and of course the ads are based on the content of the site. While the main page content may be a little too broad to target effectively, I think we'll find that the individual entries will be pretty spot-on.

NB: It may take a few hours or days to get truly tailored ads. In the mean time, I know you ALL want to buy those Reagan stamps and Jewish books. (Not sure how that came up.)

So please, give me your feedback. And by all means, if you see an interesting ad, click on through!

It's great, I clicked on the Ronald Reagan 1 ounce pure silver commemorative $9.95 limited time offer a few times.

It works great on the home page, but on the blog item pages (like we're looking at right now) it kind of interrupts the flow, do you agree? Is there a way to keep it over to the side like on the home page?

Just curious.

By the way, Jay, that man you're selling out to? Isn't that you? Or me? Or something?

While the main page ads still kind of suck, the individual and category archive items are pretty dead-on. And I tried another configuration to deal with the issue Kevin pointed out. Better? To put all this in context, we made $0.55 today--putting the site on track to be self-supporting. Whoo hoo!

As long as the links that Google presents are interesting or entertaining, it could be fun. I've viewed some of the individual entries to see what Google presented as relevant. (Did you know that you can rent an apartment just for the Democratic National Convention?)

I would, by the way, also be willing to put up cash from the selling out that I do every day.

Of course, when the Google payments really start rolling in, you'll need to work out an income-sharing scheme. You'll let us know, right?
