Are the '00s the new '30s?

This might not count as healthy paranoia, but since we're on the topic: Are Parallels To Nazi Germany Crazy?

There's also the less freaky but still paranoid comparison to the Roman Empire. Here's "Waiting for the Barbarians" on the Guardian.

Remember this classic Indiana Jones quote? "Nazis. I hate those guys."

After this post of David's, I went looking for a quote that I read some many months ago—it might've been about Bush's previous State of the Union address, though I'm not sure. The comment I sought was from someone saying that Bush's speech was "better in the original German".

I never did find the specific instance that I wanted, but I did find two things:


Many people are comparing the current administration to Nazi Germany. Here's another (that I haven't really read).
Molly Ivins made the comment "probably better in the original German" back in '92 about Pat Buchanan's GOP convention speech
